The1:59 Club

For several years now one of the regular Sunday morning club runs has been the "Brown Mountain" run.

Starting from the ranger station parking lot at Hahamonga Park, running up the Arroyo to the Brown Mountain fire road, past the saddle, and continuing to the top of Brown Mountain. The route is approximately 7 miles uphill followed by 7 miles of down. The Sunday regulars always have considered this a tough workout. About 2 years ago the Park Service closed the Ranger Station and our start location was moved to the softball field parking lot, adding about 3/4 mile to the run.

In typical Flyers style some members always made the route up the hill an informal race, pushing each other a little faster as the top got closer. When Kevin Hoard started coming along on this run the downhill sections got a little faster as well.

After one particular fast return trip it was noted that the elapsed time for the first finishers was just a little over 2 hours. The challenge was obvious, get to the top of Brown Mountain and back in less than two hours!

The Sunday regulars have now set the standard for the Brown Mountain 1:59 Club. This a very informal club and the only benefit is increased bragging rights with your friends.

Men under 50 years old must make it to the top and back under 2:00 hours. Men over 50 receive a 5 minute handicap; men over 60 receive 10 minutes Women under 50 receive a 5 minute handicap; women over 50 receive 10 minutes; women over 60 receive 15 minutes.

If you are up to the challenge come out on a Sunday and with the group and give it a shot. If you make it please let one of the Board members know and weÕll post your name here with the other members.
